Kid Konnection: What are the Chances?

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week, I'm going to share with you a big hit in our house! Hint: It's a sports book!

Summary: How often do golfers make a hole in one? What are the chances you'll catch a foul ball at a baseball game? How often do Number 1 draft picks become Super Bowl winners?

This book is the perfect combination of little-known stats, amazing plays, and fun facts. Not only will we address all the burning questions that curious sports fans want to know, this book will highlight some incredible moments and underscore exactly how special those highlight-reel plays are. -- Sports Illustrated Kids

If you follow my blog, then you know that Booking Son is a huge sports fan. He wants to be a sports announcer when he grows up and he's doing his darndest to prepare even now. He isn't an avid reader, but he will read anything having to do with sports, and specifically sports statistics. Needless to say, he loved SPORTS ILLUSTRATED KIDS WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?: THE WILDEST PLAYS IN SPORTS.

I have to agree with him that WHAT ARE THE CHANCES? is a pretty cool book. This book is a great resource for sports fans, and it's not only full of interesting statistics but also information about famous athletes. Basically, this book looks at some of the most amazing plays and accomplishments in sports and then provides fun facts and statistics about them. For a sports nut like Booking Son, it was heaven!

The 120+ page book is divided into the following chapters (which I happen to think are pretty cute!): Rare, Really Rare, Super Rare, Almost Impossible, and Never Happened. Within each section, there are many interesting tidbits. For example, one of the really rare stats is 6 Consecutive Games With a Home Run. There are 17 major league players who have done that and only three who have had homers in eight consecutive games.

I most appreciated the Never Happened chapter. One of the Never Happened stats that many of you will know is 100 Points in an NBA game -- Will Chamberlain holds that record! But do you know who had 300 Rushing Yards in a Game? Answer: Adrian Peterson!

I'm also a pretty big sports fan and I have to say that I had so much fun with this book. Liking my son, I enjoy numbers and statistics, but I also loved the color photographs in this book. Sports Illustrated always has the best sports photos and this book is no exception!

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES? is a wonderful book for young sports fans. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Goodman Media International, Inc. for providing a review copy of this book.
