Kid Konnection: Show Me History! Books

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a series of books that parents and kids alike will love!

Summary: Considered by many historians to be the greatest American president, Abraham Lincoln led the Union at the greatest turning point in the nation’s history. Abraham Lincoln: Defender of the Union! tells the story of one of America’s most admired figures in graphic novel format. From his childhood on a farm in Kentucky to the battlefields of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln served the United States with resolve, intelligence, and courage unlike that of any other president. Readers of all ages will be entertained and educated by the full-color illustrations and historically accurate narrative of this graphical biography. -- Portable Press

Summary: Alexander Hamilton: The Fighting Founding Father! tells the story of one of the most ambitious and controversial figures in American history in a graphic novel format. From a rough childhood on the Caribbean island of Nevis to the highest levels of American politics, Alexander Hamilton’s life was filled with adventure, conflict, and controversy. Full-color illustrations and an entertaining narrative make this graphical biography of America’s first Secretary of the Treasury accessible for readers of all ages. -- Portable Press

Summary: This graphical biography tells the story of the most prominent leader of the American civil rights movement. With full-color illustrations and a historically accurate narrative, Martin Luther King Jr.: Voice for Equality! will inform and entertain readers of all ages. From his childhood in Atlanta to his rise as an international icon of human rights and a fiery orator who refused to back down in the face of adversity, King’s life story serves as an ongoing source of inspiration. -- Portable Press

Summary: When Amelia Earhart became the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, she immediately became an American icon and a subject of endless fascination for generations to come. In Amelia Earhart: Pioneer of the Sky!, the story of the bold and daring aviator’s life is presented in graphic novel format, with full-color illustrations and historically accurate details. From her hardscrabble childhood to her final flight—and mysterious disappearance—Earhart’s journey will entertain, captivate, and inspire readers of all ages. -- Portable press

I am so impressed with the Show Me History! series of biographies for readers ages 8 - 12. These books are a winner of the 2019 National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA), and they are a fantastic way to make learning fun for kids. The four books in the series are ABRAHAM LINCOLN: DEFENDER OF THE UNION! by Mark Shulman and Tom Martin, ALEXANDER HAMILTON: THE FIGHTING FOUNDING FATHER by Mark Shulman and Kelly Tindall, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: VOICE FOR EQUALITY! by James Buckley Jr. and Youneek Studios, and AMELIA EARHART: PIONEER OF THE SKY! by James Buckley Jr. and Kelly Tindall; and I honestly can't even pick a favorite because they are all so outstanding. These hardcover books are written in a graphic novel format with colorful illustrations, and I think even the most reluctant readers will be drawn to these history books about some of our country's most interesting heroes.

I've read some graphic novel history books in the past and enjoyed them quite a bit, but I think the Show Me History! series has definitely perfected this art. Each of these books provides a brief history of these individuals' lives and accomplishments with fun pictures and few words. Kids will definitely learn the highlights of these people's lives while not being turned off by a long and "boring" biography. In fact, the books' website claims, "It's a time machine you can read!"

In addition to the accounts of history, the end of these books also include some interesting pages that complement the biographies. There are lists of other individuals who were relevant to the specific cause as well as timelines, glossaries, and ways to find out more about these people. I love that these books encourage kids to discover more about these American heroes on their own by providing books, websites, and videos!

I definitely recommend this series to teachers as well as parents because the publisher has made these books ideal for learning. In addition to the approachable format of a graphic novel, they also have made resources readily available to enrich the reading experience. There are reading guides as well as interviews with the creators. There are also sample pages to download:
I highly recommend the Show Me History! series of graphic novels for all school and home libraries.

Thanks to Media Master for providing review copies of these books.

Kid Konnection: Fox & Chick The Quiet Boat Ride

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you an adorable picture book about two unlikely friends.

Summary: In the second book of this lauded series, Fox and Chick are off on three new adventures involving a boat ride, a mysterious box, and an early morning trip to see the sunrise. Despite the antics ensuing from their opposite personalities, the contradictory duo always manages to find a happy center. This early chapter book in comic-book form is perfect for emerging readers, while the sweet and funny characters and captivating art hold appeal for picture book audiences as well. -- Chronicle Books

I fell hard for the picture book FOX & CHICK: THE QUIET BOAT RIDE AND OTHER STORIES by Sergio Ruzzier. Even though it's not available for another few weeks (March 5th), I couldn't wait to share it with you. This picture book/early chapter book/graphic novel has three chapters, each of  which is an entertaining little story about two unlikely friends.

First of all, I can't tell you how much I adore Fox and Chick. They are so cute together... and total opposites. The way Fox handles Chick's incessant questions is hilarious, and even though they are very different, they manage to work things out. There are definitely important messages in this book about friendship and respect!

I'm not sure which story I liked the best. The first one is "The Quiet Boat Ride" which tells the story of how Chick "ruins" Fox's plan for a quiet boat. The second story is "Chocolate Cake" which shows how much better it is to share a cake with a friend that to eat it by yourself. And the last story is "The Sunrise" which shows how Chick manages to almost ruin Fox's plan to see a sunrise.

I think FOX & CHICK: THE QUIET BOAT RIDE will appeal to both picture book and early reader fans. The book is set up in three chapters in a comic strip format so it's easy to read for beginner readers. In addition, there are lots of adorable pictures which also make it fun for little ones. Given that the stories are funny, parents and kids alike should appreciate this book.

After I finished reading FOX & CHICK: THE QUIET BOAT RIDE, I learned that this book is the second in the Fox & Chick series. There is also a book called FOX & CHICK: THE PARTY. I'm going to have to check this one out too because I love the dynamics between these two characters!

FOX & CHICK: THE QUIET BOAT RIDE is so much fun. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Hey, Kiddo

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a terrific graphic novel.

Summary: In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery. Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents. Two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along. Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his non normal life as normal as possible, finding a way to express himself through drawing even as so little is being said to him about what's going on. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father. Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive. -- Scholastic

Looking back at Book Expo, one of the highlights was getting a signed copy of HEY, KIDDO: HOW I LOST MY MOTHER, FOUND MY FATHER, AND DEALT WITH FAMILY ADDICTION by Jarrett J. Krosoczka. I have been a big fan of the Lunch Lady series for years; and when I found out that the author had written a memoir about his childhood, I just knew it would be something special!

HEY, KIDDO is truly a wonderful graphic novel about Jarrett Krosoczka's complicated childhood. His mother was an addict, who was absent for long periods from Jarrett's life; and he didn't really know his father at all. He lived with his maternal grandparents who undoubtedly loved him, but weren't always the easiest people to life with.

As Jarrett grows older and becomes more aware of his family situation, he begins to realize the truth about his parents. He learns to accept his mother and he even begins to have a relationship of sorts with his father. Despite all of this things, Jarrett does his best to just be "normal," and in the process, he finds that his love of drawing helps him not only survive, but thrive!

Words cannot express how much I adored HEY, KIDDO. This graphic novel has fantastic illustrations (of course!), but I was truly blown away by how these drawings were able to convey the different characters' emotions. I'm not a huge reader of graphic novels (although I do enjoy them when I pick one up!), and I guess I didn't realize just how intense they can be.

It certainly didn't hurt that Mr. Krosoczka had a powerful childhood story. His situation was definitely complicated; and it's a true testament, both to him and his grandparents, how he was able to use art to cope. I found Mr. Krosoczka's strength to be admirable, and I think middle graders and high schoolers will find much to appreciate in this story.

However, it's how much this book has the potential to help children in similar situations that really makes HEY, KIDDO so amazing. Mr. Krosoczka's story is not only heartwarming, but it also shows children that it's possible to get through difficult times with a good support system. Furthermore, it's also possible to get through difficult times if you find something inside of yourself that can make you happy, like Mr. Krosoczka love of drawing.

HEY, KIDDO has already been chosen as a 2018 National Book Award Finalist, and I honestly can't think of a book (or author) that is more deserving. Highly recommended!

I received a copy of HEY, KIDDO at the 2018 Book Expo.

Review: Anne of Green Gables, A Graphic Novel

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a spin on a classic that I reviewed last weekend!

Summary: The magic of L.M. Montgomery’s treasured classic is reimagined in a whimsically-illustrated graphic novel adaptation perfect for newcomers and kindred spirits alike.

When Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert decide to adopt an orphan who can help manage their family farm, they have no idea what delightful trouble awaits them. With flame-red hair and an unstoppable imagination, 11-year-old Anne Shirley takes Green Gables by storm.

Anne’s misadventures bring a little romance to the lives of everyone she meets: her bosom friend, Diana Barry; the town gossip, Mrs. Lynde; and that infuriating tease, Gilbert Blythe. From triumphs and thrills to the depths of despair, Anne turns each everyday moment into something extraordinary. -- Andrews McMeel

I'm all about Anne of Green Gables lately! First, I finally read the novel and got around to reviewing it last week; and now... I finished ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: A GRAPHIC NOVEL adapted by Mariah Marsden and illustrated by Brenna Thummler. I think this graphic novel is a terrific complement to the original book.

I think most of you are already familiar with Anne and her story, so ANNE OF GREEN GABLES: A GRAPHIC NOVEL should be a treat. I know it was for me! However in hindsight, I also think those of you new to Anne will appreciate this book. It's a fantastic way to "meet" Anne and her friends; and I do think it will encourage younger readers to pick up the larger full sized novel.

This 228 page graphic novel features all of the highlights of ANNE OF GREEN GABLES including some beloved scenes with Mrs. Lynde, Gilbert Blythe, and her bestie Diana Barry. Of course, there is also plenty of Matthew and Marilla! I enjoyed seeing images of the people and places that I have grown to love, and the panels of fun color illustrations were a good fit with the feel of the story.

For those of you who are fans of Anne as well as those of you are who new to Anne, you won't want to miss this gorgeous adaptation of her early life at Green Gables. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Lucy & Andy Neanderthal - The Stone Cold Age

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you the second book in the Lucy & Andy Neanderthal graphic novel series.

Summary: Neanderthal siblings Lucy and Andy are back to their paleo pranks. This time, they have to put up with more than just each other—the cave is feeling awfully cramped since the humans moved in. They’re in the Ice Age, and legroom comes at a real premium!

Jeffrey Brown skillfully blends humor and history with paleontologist sections: Timeline of Key Discoveries, Ice Age Fact vs. Fiction, Silly Cavemen Myths, and more. -- Crown Books for Young Readers

Lucy and Andy, everyone's favorite Neanderthal duo, are back in LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL: THE STONE COLD AGE. I loved the first book in this graphic novel series for its blend of hilarious storytelling and science facts. Plus, who doesn't enjoy bestselling author/illustrator Jeffrey Brown's adorable illustrations?

In THE STONE COLD AGE, Lucy and Andy find themselves in a somewhat uncomfortable home situation. Not only is their cave crowded after the homo spies arrive on the scene, but it's also really cold... like Ice Age cold.

It's no surprise that I loved THE STONE COLD AGE. It's a quick read and perfect for reluctant readers. Plus, it's both funny and educational -- the best of both worlds for a middle grade book. Lucy and Andy are fantastic characters (especially Andy!), and their adventures are always exciting. Maybe the best thing I can say about this book is how excited Booking Son was when he saw it on my desk. He's not always a big fan of graphic novels, but this is one series that he enjoys!

As a mom, I really can't rave enough about these books. I have always had an interest in anthropology, and I don't remember learning much about Neanderthals in school. The Lucy and Andy series is a terrific way for today's kids to learn about the past. Much of the book focuses on the Ice Age, but there is even information about climate change and the effects it is having on us today.

The majority of the book is about Lucy and Andy's adventures, but at the end of each chapter, modern day anthropologists chime in with some fun facts about that time period. In addition, the end of the book has some terrific resources including a Timeline of Key Discoveries, Ice Age Fact vs Fiction, and Silly Caveman Myths. There is even a preview of Book 3 which comes out in summer 2018.

If you haven't seen this middle grade graphic novel series, then I highly recommend checking it out. Without a doubt, THE STONE COLD AGE belongs in home and school libraries.

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Lights, Camera, Middle School!

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a middle grade book starring the popular character Babymouse.

Summary: ABOUT LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL!

It’s a new kind of book for Babymouse! Fans of Dork Diaries, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and James Patterson’s Middle School books, this is going to be epic. . . .

For Babymouse, middle school is like a monster movie. You can never be sure who’s a friend and who’s an enemy, and the halls are filled with mean-girl zombies. Instead of brains, the zombies hunger for stuff—the perfect wedge sandals or the right shade of sparkly lip gloss—and they expect everyone to be just like them.

But Babymouse doesn’t want to fit in—she wants to stand out! So she joins the film club to write and direct a sweeping cinematic epic. Will making the film of her dreams turn into a nightmare?

Thanks to Babymouse, middle school gets schooled in this hilarious new series from bestselling authors Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm. -- Random House

I love Babymouse, so I was thrilled to learn that this character is now starring in middle grade graphic novels. LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL! is the first book in the BABYMOUSE TALES FROM THE LOCKER series by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm, and it's sure to be a hit. This book encompasses everything fans have come to know and love about Babymouse, namely adorable illustration and lots of humor!

Babymouse is discovering that middle school isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's kind of like a scary monster movie with the spooky creatures in the halls and zombie girls; and Babymouse feels like she has to run for her life! There is a lot of pressure to fit in, but Babymouse would rather stand-out. (Isn't that just typical for Babymouse?)

Like most animals, Babymouse is trying to find a sport or club that she wants to join. After a great deal of consideration, she decides to join the film club. She is tasked with writing and directing a movie that will be viewed by her entire class. Needless to say, Babymouse is thrilled to have this responsibility; however, she quickly learns that it's not easy to be in charge. She has a diva starring in her movie, budget constraints, and more! Will making a movie prove to be even more difficult than navigating middle school?

I loved LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL!, but of course, I did. It's written by none other than the sister/brother duo Jennifer and Matthew Holm. They are absolutely amazing, and together, they create some very entertaining novels. I think Mr. Holm's illustrations are the perfect complement to Ms. Holm's text. and I love how much humor they incorporate into the books with both their writing and drawings.

I think LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL! is an ideal read for middle grade readers, especially those who like graphic novels with short chapters. The story is definitely entertaining, namely due to the humor; and even the most reluctant of readers will like this book. The text is relatively large and there are illustrations on every page, so it's not intimidating in the least. In fact, it's a great introduction for readers ready to embark on early chapter books.

I'm going to put my mom hat on for the next paragraph! I loved that there were some valuable lessons included in Babymouse's story. Babymouse learned so many things about socializing, organizing, and managing, but she also learned a great deal about herself. I have a feeling that many kids will relate to Babymouse and her attempts to stand out in a crowd... and find herself along the way!

LIGHTS, CAMERA, MIDDLE SCHOOL! is a terrific addition to the Babymouse library as well as a great start to a new series. Fans of the Dork Diaries and Wimpy Kid books will love this book. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Lucy & Andy Neanderthal

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a middle grade graphic novel that's both fun and educational!

Summary: From the author of the New York Times bestselling Jedi Academy books comes a hilarious graphic novel series about two young cave kids living 40,000 years ago.

Lucy and Andy are a sister and brother who get into trouble much like any sister and brother. Only difference? Lucy and Andy live in the Stone Age! Discover their laugh-out-loud adventures as the Paleo pair take on a wandering baby sibling, bossy teens, cave paintings, and a mammoth hunt. But what will happen when they encounter a group of humans?

Includes extra information about Neanderthal life that’s sure to appeal to future paleontologists and science phobes alike! And don’t miss Lucy and Andy’s next outing, Lucy & Andy Neanderthal: The Stone Cold Age — coming soon! -- Crown

I've been wanting to pick up the middle grade graphic novel LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL by Jeffrey Brown ever since I saw the review on Bermuda Onion's blog. Booking Son is a big fan of Mr. Brown's Jedi Academy series, so there was that. Plus, I thought the cover and illustrations looked adorable.

LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL tells the story of brother and sister team, Lucy and Andy. They are pretty typical siblings -- they definitely like to argue and fight; and there is always competition between the two. They have some interesting encounters like sneaking out for a mammoth hunt and losing their baby brother... and even meeting humans!  Despite living in the Stone Age, I do think their actions will resonate with a lot of readers.

I have to say that there's a lot to like about LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL! It's a terrific book for middle grade readers, even the reluctant ones. The illustrations are fantastic and the storylines are entertaining. There is also a ton of silly humor which I promise will bring a smile to your kid's face. And last but not least (and maybe my favorite part of the book)... there is some great information on the history of Neanderthal life.

In addition to the comic strip panels which tell Lucy and Andy's story, there are pages at the end of each section which show two scientists studying and discussing Neanderthals. There are also notes throughout the book with offer some teaching moments. I love that these parts of the book provide information about the Stone Age; and kids will be having so much fun, they won't even realize that they are learning!

I was excited to learn that LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL is the first book in the series. The next book will be called LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL: THE STONE COLD AGE. I honestly enjoyed this book so much that I was left wanting more. These characters are engaging, and it's a great way to learn about science and history.

LUCY & ANDY NEANDERTHAL is a winner and should be a must-have in classrooms and libraries. Highly recommended to middle grade readers ages 8 - 12.

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Review: Welcome to Wonderland - Home Sweet Motel

Summary: From Chris Grabenstein, the bestselling author of Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library and co-author with James Patterson of I Funny, House of Robots, and Treasure Hunters, comes a hilarious illustrated series about all the wacky things that happen when you live in a motel!

Eleven-year-old P. T. Wilkie may be the greatest storyteller alive. But he knows one thing for a fact: the Wonderland Motel is the best place a kid could ever live! All-you-can-eat poolside ice cream! A snack machine in the living room! A frog slide! A giant rampaging alligator! (Okay, that last one may or may not be made up.) There’s only one thing the Wonderland doesn’t have, though—customers. And if the Wonderland doesn’t get them soon, P.T. and his friend Gloria may have to say goodbye to their beloved motel forever.

They need to think BIG. They need to think BOLD. They need an OUTRAGEOUS plan. Luckily for them, Gloria is a business GENIUS, and OUTRAGEOUS is practically P.T.’s middle name. With Gloria’s smarts and P.T.’s world-famous stories and schemes, there’s got to be a way to save the Wonderland!

BONUS: Includes fun extras like P. T. Wilkie’s outrageous (and sometimes useful) things you learn living in a motel. Installment 1: How to say “Help! The toilet is clogged!” in over twenty languages! -- Random House

Over the past few years, there are few middle grade authors that I appreciate as much as Chris Grabenstein. His books are both smart and funny, and ones that I guarantee parents and kids alike will love! His latest is WELCOME TO WONDERLAND #1: HOME SWEET MOTEL, and it's the first in the new Welcome to Wonderland series. I loved HOME SWEET MOTEL and can't wait to see what's next!

HOME SWEET MOTEL tells the story of P.T. Wilkie, an eleven year old boy who is a terrific storyteller and just happens to live in a run down hotel in Florida. His grandfather's hotel used to have some fame, but now that darn mouse and his amusement park get all of the tourists. P.T. still thinks that living in a hotel is pretty darn cool. He has a big pool, all you can eat ice cream, snack and soda machines, and he gets to live with his eccentric grandfather, the man behind the Wonderland Motel.

However, his mom is feeling the financial pressures of having a hotel that doesn't have customers; and P.T. wants to help save his home. Thankfully, P.T. makes a fast friend when Gloria checks into the hotel with her father. P.T. definitely takes after his grandfather in coming up with creative ways to save the motel, while Gloria is more pragmatic -- she can monetize almost any zany idea that P.T. comes up with. The two find some success with their promotions including poolside karaoke with a singing frog and a unique scavenger hunt.

Things become even more complicated for P.T. and Gloria when two jewel thieves check into the motel. These two men have been recently released from prison and they are back at the Wonderland looking for jewels that they left here many years ago. Cha Ching! P.T. and Gloria decide that if they can find the jewels before the two thieves, then they can save the motel!

I adored HOME SWEET MOTEL! It is an exciting story filled with lots of action and tension; however, it's also a funny story about friendship and creativity. I absolutely loved P.T. and Gloria (and even P.T.'s unique and oblivious grandfather), and I think Mr. Grabenstein is definitely onto something with this setting and these characters.

I am a big fan of mysteries, and I appreciated that there was definitely a big mystery element in this novel. I almost thought the premise of these two kids trying to save the motel provided enough adventures for the novel; however, the addition of the two jewel thieves brought the story to the next level. I loved these two kids putting themselves at risk with these cagey characters for a greater good!

Another fun aspect of this book is the inclusion of black and white cartoon sketches. They are so cute and totally capture the essence of the corny decor of the hotel. They also included word bubbles which added to the humor in the story. I especially loved the chapter dividers -- flamingos!

The book is hilarious, but it isn't all fun and games! There are a few serious issues introduced which I suspect might be delved into in future books. P.T.'s father is MIA and my heart went out to him. His mother is also extremely stressed while trying to be a parent and run a failing motel. These issues weren't huge downers at all, but they did make the characters a bit more human.

Overall, I adored HOME SWEET MOTEL and I can't wait for the next installment in the series -- BEACH PARTY SURF MONKEY!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this novel.

Kid Konnection: The Mighty Odds

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a new middle grade book that's sure to be the start of a terrific series.

Summary: From the renowned author/illustrator of the Popularity Papers series, Amy Ignatow, comes the first installment in a new series about a diverse crew of middle school kids who develop very limited superhero powers after a strange accident and manage to become unlikely friends on the adventure of a lifetime.

When a sweet nerd, an artsy cartoonist, a social outcast, and the most popular girl in school are involved in a mysterious bus accident, this seemingly random group of kids starts to notice some very strange abilities they did not have before. Artsy Martina can change her eye color. Nerdy Nick can teleport . . . four inches to the left. Outcast Farshad develops super strength, but only in his thumbs. And Cookie, the It Girl of school’s most popular clique, has suddenly developed the ability to read minds . . . when those minds are thinking about directions. They are oddly mighty—especially together.

This group—who would never hang out under normal circumstances—must now combine all of their strengths to figure out what happened during the bus accident. With alternating narratives from each of the heroes, including illustrated pieces from Martina, and featuring bold female superheroes and a multicultural cast, The Mighty Odds is The Breakfast Club for a new generation. -- Abrams

When I learned that Amy Ignatow, author of the Popularity Papers series, had a new book out, I jumped at the chance to read it. I loved meeting Amy years ago at the Kid Lit Festival at Aaron's Books, and Booking Daughter and I both enjoyed the Popularity Papers books. It just so happened that I received an ARC of her new novel THE MIGHTY ODDS prior to leaving for SIBA, and I read it right away. It was so good! Imagine my surprise when I arrived at a SIBA book signing to find that Amy was there signing final copies of THE MIGHTY ODDS!

THE MIGHTY ODDS is the first book in a new series about a group of middle school kids who find themselves with super-hero powers after a bus accident. These kids aren't a pretty diverse group -- one is a nerd, one is an artist, one is a bit of an outcast, and the last one is the most popular girl in the school! When they find themselves thrown together on the same small bus after a field trip, they are less than thrilled.

Things begin to get strange when the bus crashes and the driver mysteriously disappears. They get even stranger when each kid discovers that they have a new super power... and it's not exactly a typical superpower. The artist Martina's eyes can change color without any notice. Nick, the sweet but nerdy kid, can teleport... or kind of. He can move exactly four inches to the right -- that's it. Farshad, a social outcast because of his heritage, becomes super strong but only with his thumbs. And Cookies, the popular one, can read minds but only when the minds are thinking about directions. Doesn't the title of the book suddenly make sense?

This unlikely group of kids suddenly finds themselves drawn together after the accident. In an effort to make sense of the bus accident, they must work together and use their new powers to solve the mysteries.

I adored THE MIGHTY ODDS and can't rave enough about this middle grade book! The book is most definitely entertaining with its multiple narrator format and its adorable illustrations. There is also enough action in the story to attract even the most reluctant of readers. On top of that, it's also pretty darn funny.

I have no doubt that middle grade readers will love this book. Truly, there's a lot of love about it. It addresses issues that kids can relate to like feeling left out, wanting to make friends, unrequited crushes, being bullied, being judged unfairly, being stereotyped, and more. And I definitely think kids will love seeing how this band of misfits work together for a greater purpose!

As a mom, I loved the story and the unique (and diverse!) cast of characters, but I really appreciated so many of the messages. They aren't in-your-face messages that will turn off kids. Rather, they are revealed through the characters' actions. The character of Farshad is treated pretty poorly because he is Iranian American -- the kids even call him "Terror Boy." His story broke my heart, but I loved that the kids eventually learned to value him for his strength and intelligence.

In addition, I appreciated that the popular (and sometimes mean) girl Cookie learned a lot of valuable lessons about not only the other kids in school but also herself. Despite being thrown for quite a loop, Cookie and all of the kids learned to depend on their own skills, as well as the strengths of others. In so many ways, this book features important messages about friendship and life in general... and, in my book, that makes for a great middle grade novel.

It's probably no surprise that the kids in THE MIGHTY ODDS figure many things out by the end of the novel; however, the author has definitely left the story open-ended for future installments in this series. Personally, I'm hooked and can't wait to see what's in store for this unusual group of friends.

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Jedi Academy A New Class

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a fun middle grade graphic novel with a Star Wars theme!

Summary: Victor Starspeeder is psyched to be starting school at the Jedi Academy. His sister, Christina does not share an enthusiasm for Victor's newfound educational path. She's horrified that her annoying baby brother will be there to cramp her style.

While Victor means well, his excess energy leads him to spend a lot of time in detention with the little, green sage, Yoda. Yoda wants to channel Victor's talents, so he makes the young Padawan join the drama club. Victor is not pleased. "Learn to control your anger, you must! Successfully manage their emotions, a good Jedi can. Box step and jazz hands ... hee hee ... young Padawan will!"

Victor will have to make new friends, get on his sister's good side, learn to use the force, and hope the year's drama club performance ("Wookie Side Story"? "Annie Get Your Lightsaber"?) goes off without a hitch! -- Scholastic

Booking Son isn't always excited about new books that come into our home. In fact, I can buy him a big order from Scholastic and he turns his nose up to every single book. However, when a package arrived last week with the new book STAR WARS JEDI ACADEMY A NEW CLASS by Jarrett J. Krosoczka and a tee-shirt, he was pretty darn happy!
STAR WARS JEDI ACADEMY A NEW CLASS is actually the fourth book in this series but the first by Mr. Krosoczka.; and I thought it was adorable. Booking Son has read a few of the books in this series when he was younger (he can't remember which ones!), and he seemed to enjoy this one quite a bit too. It was both funny and sweet, and as a mom, I loved the messages.

A NEW CLASS tells the story of Victor Starspeeder, a young Padawan who is starting school at the Jedi Academy. His sister, Christina, already attends the school and she's not exactly thrilled that her younger brother will be following in her footsteps.

Victor isn't your typical candidate for the Jedi Academy. He has a lot of energy... and I mean a lot of energy. Yoda recognizes that Victor has potential to be a good Jedi, but he also has some anger issues. To help Victor control his issues, he encourages him to join the drama club. Victor is less than thrilled!

Victor quickly learns that the rigorous Jedi work is not easy and he's going to have to apply himself. He also learns that not everyone who seems nice is actually nice. With the help of his sister and his new friends, he works extra hard to learn the force and be the best young Jedi he can be!

A NEW CLASS was definitely a cute book. I thought the illustrations were adorable (think Lunch Lady!) and they seemed to fit well with the story. I also just liked the general tone of the book. Victor was a great character who wanted to be a good Jedi, but he was also a boy who managed to get himself into some sticky situations. I thought he was extremely funny.

The other characters in A NEW CLASS were great too. The Droids were funny and there were other characters that readers will recognize. Of course, I adored Yoda -- who better to be an instructor at the Jedi Academy. His wisdom definitely shined through, and I thought his backwards way of expressing himself was hilarious.

I loved seeing Victor mature and learn how to use the Force, but I also loved the life lessons that he learned in his first year at the academy. He discovered that not everything is as it seems and that you can find good friends in unlikely places. I think kids will be able to relate to Victor's challenges with starting a new school, taking difficult classes, and making new friends.

Overall, STAR WARS JEDI ACADEMY A NEW CLASS is a very fun graphic novel for kids. I highly recommend it to reluctant readers and fans of Star Wars!

Thanks to the publisher and Big Honcho Media for providing the tee-shirt and review copy of this book.

Review: I am Martin Luther King, Jr.

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a terrific kids book by a best-selling author.

Summary: We can all be heroes. That’s the inspiring message of this New York Times Bestselling picture book biography series from historian and author Brad Meltzer.

Even as a child, Martin Luther King, Jr. was shocked by the terrible and unfair way African-American people were treated. When he grew up, he decided to do something about it—peacefully, with powerful words. He helped gather people together for nonviolent protests and marches, and he always spoke up about loving other human beings and doing what’s right. He spoke about the dream of a kinder future, and bravely led the way toward racial equality in America.

This lively, New York Times Bestselling biography series inspires kids to dream big, one great role model at a time. You’ll want to collect each book. -- Dial

I already have a pretty high opinion of bestselling author Brad Meltzer. I love his thrillers and his nonfiction gift books HEROES FOR MY SON and HEROES FOR MY DAUGHTER are extremely special (and important) books. Now, he's started a collection of picture books for the younger set called Ordinary People Change the World, and I've only read two of them but I think Mr. Meltzer is becoming one of my favorite children's authors too!

His latest picture book that was released just this week is titled I AM MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR, and the timing is absolutely perfect because Martin Luther King, Jr. day is just nine days away. This book is truly something special! It doesn't hurt when you have a hero and great American as your subject matter, but the presentation makes this book even better.

The book is written in MLK's first person voice with cute speech bubbles, and I think it makes the story all that more interesting for kids. In addition, the story includes what you'd expect -- the important speeches and marches, but it also includes some interesting tidbits from his childhood. Mr. Meltzer does a wonderful job of showing children that these larger-than-life individuals were just normal kids like them. He provides hope that everyone has the power to be an amazing adult and make a difference in the world.

All of this might sound a little over-the-top, a little much for a small picture book; however, I dare you to check out this series and not agree. Mr. Meltzer has done an amazing job of showing how the little things you experience in the normal course of your childhood build character. Let me give you an example:

In I AM MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR., Mr. Meltzer explains that MLK was accident prone. There is a cute illustration showing him bumping down the steps which will garner a laugh or two along with the speech bubbles like "Whoa! Amazing Fall!" and an "I'm Okay!" However, the page ends with this:

No matter how many times I fell, I kept getting back up.

I was also extremely impressed with how the book handled the issue of race and prejudice. Keep in mind this book is aimed at kids ages five to eight. It's an important topic, for sure, but not one that most of us are very comfortable in explaining to young children. Not only does this book show the great man that MLK was, it also does a wonderful job of showing the problems in our country and the progress it has made through the years (of course, much of this is due to that same great man!) It also teaches children and reminds adults of MLK's beliefs and his hope for reaching that dream.

I AM MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. is illustrated by Christopher Eliopoulos. His drawings are fantastic. They have a comic book quality to them, but I'm sure the speech bubbles add to that look. What really is so darn cute about this book, though, is that MLK is drawn as a child in size even when he's an adult. And get this... he has a mustache from the very start!

I can't rave enough about I AM MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. It's a fantastic picture book that is both cute and educational. Most importantly, the messages in this story are wonderful... for kids and adults!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: The Tapper Twins Tear Up New York

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you the second book in a series that I adore!

Summary: The Tapper twins' scavenger hunt takes cutthroat competition to hilarious new heights!

In the follow up to The Tapper Twins Go to War, Geoff Rodkey delivers another ultra-modern comedy told as oral history with texts, screenshots and smartphone photos. When Claudia initiates a citywide scavenger hunt to raise money for charity, it's not just the twins' opposing teams that run riot. With the whole school racing to trade in sights seen for points to score front row tickets at Madison Square Garden, they may not get to the finish line with their dignity-and social lives-intact! -- Little, Brown

Earlier this year, I reviewed THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER) by Geoff Rodkey. I absolutely loved this book and was so excited to learn that it was the first book in a planned series. The followup story, THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK, is now available; and I think I loved it even more... if that's possible.

In THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK, twins Claudia and Reese are back with more of their fun antics. This time, Claudia comes up with a great idea to make money for a charity -- a scavenger hunt in New York City. Reese and Claudia are, of course, on opposing teams (with a totally different strategy!); however, both kids find themselves up against some serious competition. Everyone wants to win the grand prize -- from row tickets for an event at Madison Square Garden! When the entire school is set loose on the streets of New York, just about everything thing that can go wrong does!

I thought THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK was fantastic and even funnier than the first book. That's really saying something because I loved the sibling rivalry and the all-out war in THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER.) In this book, the twins are technically against each other in their quest to complete the scavenger hunt with the most points; however, there are a few other teams from their school that give them quite the challenge. Don't worry, though, the twins still manage to make plenty of jabs at each other!

I loved Claudia and Reese from the moment I first "met" them in the first book, but now I can claim to adore their parents too. In this story, the twins' father exhibits some pretty irresponsible behavior, and I loved the banter between the parents that occurred as a result. I also liked that there was a group of popular (or mean) girls that made the scavenger hunt extra challenging for Claudia's team!

Once again, Mr. Rodkey has made a fun book that even the most reluctant readers will have a hard time putting down. The humor is just right for middle grade readers, and there are enough interesting "things" to look at in the book. THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK isn't a traditional graphic novel (mainly because the author claims he can't draw), but it does have a lot of "graphics" on the pages of this book. Since the book is written as an oral history, the author has included photographs, copies of emails, text message streams, maps and more to bring the story to life. They help to break up the reading for readers who aren't comfortable with a lot of text, but I think they are just plain fun!

THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK is very fast-paced and exciting but it also shows New York City in a fun way. I love New York so I especially enjoyed "visiting" landmarks with the various scavenger hunt teams. In addition, I think kids who aren't familiar with the city will appreciate seeing some of the famous (and not-so-famous) sights.

Finally, I enjoyed that THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK had a bit of a surprise ending. I don't want to give too much away but I will say that things aren't quite as they initially appear. I guess that's why it's up to Claudia and Reese to explain the entire catastrophe and clear up what local newspapers are reporting about the event!

I actually waited in line for an autographed copy of this book at the 2015 BEA.

Kid Konnection: The Marvels & Giveaway

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a truly incredible book by none other than Brian Selznick.

Summary: Caldecott Award winner and bookmaking trailblazer Brian Selznick once again plays with the form he invented and takes readers on an awe-inspiring voyage! Two seemingly unrelated stories-one in words, the other in pictures-come together with spellbinding synergy! The illustrated story begins in 1766 with Billy Marvel, the lone survivor of a shipwreck, and charts the adventures of his family of actors over five generations. The prose story opens in 1990 and follows Joseph, who has run away from school to an estranged uncle's puzzling house in London, where he, along with the reader, must piece together many mysteries. How the picture and word stories intersect will leave readers marveling over Selznick's storytelling prowess.

Filled with mystery, vibrant characters, surprise twists, and heartrending beauty, and featuring Selznick's most arresting art to date, The Marvels is a moving tribute to the power of story. -- Scholastic

I am so excited to have the opportunity to share my adoration for THE MARVELS by Caldecott Medal winning author Brian Selznick! This book is fantastic and I'm finding that there aren't enough words to truly convey how amazing it is. If you are familiar with Mr. Selznick's other books, then you know his work is magical. His illustrations are jaw-dropping with their exquisite detail, and he also manages to write beautiful stories to complement them. He's done it again with THE MARVELS.

I am not alone in my praise for THE MARVELS -- it is getting rave reviews! It has already received starred reviews from Booklist, Kirkus, Publishers Weekly, and School Library Journal; and it was selected as an Autumn 2015 Kids' Indie Next List Selection. If you can't tell already, THE MARVELS is a must-read for kids of all ages!

THE MARVELS is unlike any book I've ever read. It's absolutely huge with almost 500 pages of drawings before the text parts of the story even begin. The pictures are, of course, beautiful as you can see from the examples below; and the written part of the novel is both powerful and surprising. I am honestly blown away by how much Mr. Selznick's accomplishes with this book -- it's epic!

THE MARVELS begins by telling the history of the Marvel family from a shipwreck in 1766 to the successes the family experienced in theatre in 1900. Oh! And did I mention that this entire story is told in almost 500 pages of pencil drawings? The book then fast forwards to 1990 when text takes over for the next 200 pages of the story.

Joseph Jervis is a 13 year old boy who escapes from his boarding school and sets out to find his Uncle Albert. Albert, a recluse, and his house look like they are both from the 1800s rather than 1990, and Joseph has a hard time reconciling his uncle's behavior as well as the mysterious voices he hears in the house. As Joseph and his new friend Frankie are determined to get to the bottom of the mysteries.

Readers will be amazed by this "marvelous" story. The book pays tribute to the Dennis Severs' House, a tourist attraction in England that is meticulously maintained to look like the 1800s. However, it's so much more than that too. THE MARVELS provides a mystery for the reader full of secrets and clues. It also is a moving look at friendship and family as well as the beauty in all forms of art.

THE MARVELS would make a wonderful discussion book for middle graders. I was so excited to find a discussion guide with ten questions and some ideas for further "explorations." Some of the themes you might want to explore include stories and books, fire, family, the house, time, grief, forgiveness, love, and perception vs. reality.

There is a website devoted to THE MARVELS that has some interesting supplemental information. There is information about the house and the theatre that the book is based on as well as Mr. Selznick's other books. Scholastic also has a terrific site that provides examples of the amazing drawings in the book and a listing of Mr. Selznick's multi-city tour.

Make sure you check out this video about THE MARVELS!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this novel.

Kid Konnection: Sunny Side Up

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a soon-to-be-released graphic novel that I adored!

Summary: Sunny Lewin has been packed off to Florida to live with her grandfather for the summer. At first she thought Florida might be fun -- it is the home of Disney World, after all. But the place where Gramps lives is no amusement park. It's full of... old people. Really old people.

Luckily, Sunny isn't the only kid around. She meets Buzz, a boy who is completely obsessed with comic books, and soon they're having adventures of their own: facing off against golf-ball-eating alligators, runaway cats, and mysteriously disappearing neighbors. But the question remains -- why is Sunny down in Florida in the first place? The answer lies in a family secret that won't be secret to Sunny much longer... -- Scholastic

I rarely read graphic novels, but when I do, I always enjoy them! I saw SUNNY SIDE UP by Jennifer L. Holm and Matthew Holm sitting on the shelf in my basement and remembered the Kathy (aka Bermudaonion) loved it. I was in the mood for a quick (but good) read and decided that the cover and title were so cute and screaming "summer."

SUNNY SIDE UP tells the story of Sunny Lewin, a young girl sent away from her home in Pennsylvania to visit her grandfather in Florida. Sunny thought this summer trip could be fun, especially if she visited Disney World; however, she quickly learned that it meant staying with her grandfather's house that smells like smoke and sleeping on an uncomfortable sofa bed.

Fortunately Sunny meets another kid her age, a boy named Buzz. Buzz's father is the gardener in the 55 and older community where Sunny's grandfather lives. Buzz introduces Sunny to comics, and together, the two create their own adventures like hunting down missing cats, collecting golf balls from alligator ridden ponds, and even finding a missing neighbor with dementia.

As Sunny's summer unfolds, the story also flashes back to the months leading up to her parents sending her to Florida. It wasn't a pretty picture. Sunny's older brother had some issues and the tension escalated on the Fourth of July. Soon after, Sunny was sent to Florida.. and left to wonder if it was all her fault.

I have to admit that I was a bit surprised by SUNNY SIDE UP and I mean that in the very best way. I thought this would be a cute story about a young girl visiting her grandfather at a 55 and older community in Florida... and it was. However, this story was also pretty deep and handled some very serious issues in a deeply touching way.

SUNNY SIDE UP is from the brother sister duo behind BABYMOUSE, and I was really surprised to learn that is is semi-autobiographical. This story is so well written (and drawn), and I love that it captures Sunny's inner turmoil. Parts of this story were heart breaking especially as it pertained to Sunny taking the blame for her brother's actions. She actually was holding all of her worries in, and she thought her parents sent her away as a punishment of sorts. Not exactly a light, fun graphic novel.

However, SUNNY SIDE UP did have its fair share of good times, too. I enjoyed the relationship between Sunny and Buzz, and their "hero" antics were adorable. I also found their shared love of comic books to be sweet, and in many ways, this graphic novel paid tribute to some pretty great comic book and superhero characters. I also laughed quite a bit at the things Sunny endured as part of living with her grandfather in a senior citizen community in Florida -- the early bird lunches, the cat ladies, and more!

One of the things that I appreciated the most about SUNNY SIDE UP was that it took place during my childhood -- Summer 1976. I could relate to Sunny's desire to visit Disney World, along with the bicentennial celebration. In addition, the drawings of the phones, suitcases, lunch boxes and thermoses, the Barbie toilet roll covers, and more were like a nostalgic walk down memory lane!

Overall, I can't say enough about SUNNY SIDE UP. I think it's a great story with wonderful illustrations that is not only certain to entertain but also to touch your heart. It's also a great way to initiate discussion with middle grade readers about some serious subjects. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Kathy (Bermudaonion) for sharing a copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: The Tapper Twins Go To War

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week, I'm going to share with you a fantastic middle grade book that's a features one heck of a sibling rivalry!

Summary: This brand-new series by a popular screenwriter is a pitch-perfect, contemporary comedy featuring twelve-year-old fraternal twins, Claudia and Reese, who couldn't be more different...except in their determination to come out on top in a vicious prank war! But when the competition escalates into an all-out battle that's fought from the cafeteria of their New York City private school all the way to the fictional universe of an online video game, the twins have to decide if their efforts to destroy each other are worth the price.

Told as a colorful "oral history" by the twins and their friends, and including photos, screenshots, chat logs, online gaming digital art, and text messages between their clueless parents, The Tapper Twins is a hilariously authentic showcase of what it's like to be in middle school in our digitally-saturated world. -- Little, Brown

Booking Son isn't crazy about reading -- I know, it absolutely breaks my heart; however, when THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER) by Geoff Rodkey arrived at our house, I noticed him checking it out. Tell me that this cover doesn't appeal to kids -- it's absolutely adorable. And fortunately, the cover wasn't the only thing special about this book. I thought it was a lot of fun... and it even had a few good messages in it,

THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER) is an account of the "war" between 12 year old twins Claudia and Reese. These two are total opposites and fight over just about anything and everything. Heck, they can't even agree to how this war started! Their battle is absolutely hilarious and neither one will stop until they "win!"

This book is part graphic novel/part oral history and provides both kids' accounts of their part in the war. The story takes them from their home to their school cafeteria to an online virtual world in a video game. There is no "agreeing to disagree" as the two continually one-up each other in this war of wills. Can this brother and sister find any common ground? Will they ever quit?

I thought THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER) was hysterically funny and truly a creative story. I loved the characters as well as the way the story was presented, and I think even reluctant readers are going to be drawn to this book. I especially appreciated that the book included not only personal accounts from Claudia and Reese, but also photos, texts, chat logs, screenshots and more!

Of course, Claudia and Reese's pranks were entertaining; and I truly was impressed with how creative they were when it came to outsmarting (or embarrassing) each other. As a reader, it was laugh out loud funny. However as a mom, I really appreciated that there were some valuable lessons included in the story. Both kids eventually came to their senses realized that they were being unusually cruel, and they also admitted that there do have an underlying love for each other... well kind of.

I was delighted to learn that THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER) is the first book in a new series. The next one, THE TAPPER TWINS TEAR UP NEW YORK, will be available in September. I don't know if I can wait!

THE TAPPER TWINS GO TO WAR (WITH EACH OTHER) is a great addition to middle school fiction, and I highly recommend it! Check out this video to get an even better idea of the book:
