Kid Konnection: 1,000 Facts About Ancient Egypt

Every weekend, I host Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you an educational book for kids interested in ancient Egypt.

Summary: Mummies, pyramids, pharaohs, King Tut! Kids everywhere are fascinated by the wonders of ancient Egypt, and this colorful reference book is jam-packed with 1,000 fascinating facts. From the Great Pyramid and the Valley of the Kings to the Nile River and Cleopatra, discover all you have ever wanted to know about this ancient civilization. Unearth ancient hieroglyphs and their meanings; find out what was in King Tut's tomb; and get insights about the science of mummification. Learn about ancient Egyptian gods and famous pharaohs, and follow Egypt's battles for power in the world. After this deep dive into Egyptology, you'll be able to dazzle your friends and family with your newfound knowledge. -- National Geographic Kids

1,000 FACTS ABOUT ANCIENT EGYPT by Nancy Honovich is yet another fantastic National Geographic Kids book. Honestly, if you haven't picked up one of these books and shared it with your kids, you need to NOW! These books are both educational and entertaining, and the photographs are outstanding (as you would expect from a National Geographic publication.)

1,000 FACTS ABOUT ANCIENT EGYPT is non-stop fun facts about ancient Egypt. After a foreword from a renowned professor of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations at Penn, the book jumps straight into pages and pages of facts. That would almost have to be the case to fit over 1,000 tidbits of Egypt trivia into this book. Some of the facts might be old news to some adults, but I bet most of them will be fascinating to kids. Heck, most of the facts were fascinating to me!

You might think that a book with just a listing of facts about Egypt would get old and maybe overwhelming, but I can assure you that's not the case. 1,000 FACTS ABOUT ANCIENT EGYPT has information presented in such a way that each page is more interesting (and fun to look at) than the next. The fact boxes include not only text, but images and photographs which add to the learning fun. In addition, there are different sections of the book that make it easy for readers to focus on one or two subjects rather than just a huge assortment of facts.

It's hard to sum up the scope of this book because it covers so darn much about ancient Egypt, but I thought I'd pick out a few "fun" ones. I was attracted to the section on Medicinal Diseases and Cures:

Egyptian dentists filled cavities with cement or a mixture of tree sap and minerals.

Wealthy Egypitans could affort meat, which is high in fat content. As a result, many people in the upper classes suffered from heart disease.

And here's another one from the 50 Plowed-Up Facts About Farming:

The limbs of fig trees are too weak to hold the weight of a person, so ancient Egyptians trained monkeys to climb up and collect the fruit.

I could go on and on with facts that I found interesting! I can't recommend 1,000 FACTS ABOUT ANCIENT EGYPT enough. This book is a must-have for school libraries and classrooms as well as home libraries!

Kid Konnection: Code-Breaking Activity Adventure

Every weekend, I host Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a fantastic book for those kids who are interested in coding!

Summary: Unlock ancient puzzles and secrets introduced via supercool codes and ciphers in this companion book to the new Explorer Academy series.

In the first activity book based on the Explorer Academy, kids test their knowledge of ancient codes and ciphers in a series of head-scratching puzzles designed to outwit even the most clever cryptographers. When kids successfully navigate the codes, they are rewarded with a first-class tour of the Academy.

Kids will have a blast, teaming up with the characters from the series and learning firsthand from the world's most renowned scientists, explorers, conservationists, photographers, and journalists. It's a far-flung adventure, too, traveling to historic and majestic locations around the globe. - National Geographic

I know my nephews (and my sister!) had their eyes NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC EXPLORER ACADEMY: CODE-BREAKING ACTIVITY ADVENTURE when I first posted it in a Mailbox Monday post. Like my son, they are huge fans of the National Geographic Kids books and that's with good reason. These books are just incredible -- beautiful photography, fun, and educational!

CODE-BREAKING ACTIVITY ADVENTURE is part of the Explorer Academy series of books and the first activity book. I just love how this book engages middle grade readers. The book begins with a letter from the "Explorer Academy President" welcoming them to the elite Explorer Academy. She goes further to explain that they will be participating in the first challenge -- the annual explorer scavenger hunt. There is a "unique series of missions that will test your codebreaking skills." Sounds fun, right?

As kids solve the puzzles/codes, they will receive a tour of the Academy. Along the way, they can "work with" teams made up of characters from the other Explorer Academy books. These characters include scientists, photographers, conservationists and more that will teach them about creative ways to unscramble encrypted maps and messages.

Over the past ten plus years that I've been reviewing kids' books, I have to admit that CODE BREAKING ACTIVITY ADVENTURE is one of the most unique books I've encountered. I would have enjoyed this book as a kid, and I know my kids would have too. The interactive nature of the book will appeal to the most reluctant of readers, and kids who are already interested in science and decoding will love it too!

This book has a lot going on! There are six different missions as well as an answer key in the back. There is an assortment of puzzles and codes on every page, some of which are challenging and some which seemed rather simple. There are also little side articles which teach kids about coding and problem solving tips.

Overall, CODE BREAKING ACTIVITY ADVENTURE is a fun way to learn problem solving and code-breaking skills. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the Media Masters for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Weird But True! USA

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you another fun book from National Geographic Kids.
Summary: It's weird. It's true. And now, it's red, white, and blue! Explore the wonderfully wacky side of the United States of America Weird But True! style. Calling all patriots! Get ready to explore wacky wonders, facts, stats, tidbits, and trivia about America's 50 states and territories! Did you know that there is a floating post office in Michigan? Or that a library book checked out by George Washington was returned to a New York City library 221 years late? Maybe you'd be amazed to discover that the ink used to print U.S. paper money is magnetic? In this latest and greatest edition of Weird But True!, you'll encounter all kinds of bizarre people, places, events, and things that make our country great. -- National Geographic Kids

WEIRD BUT TRUE! USA: 300 FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT THE FIFTY STATES is another great addition to the Weird but True series from National Geographic Kids. This book is an entertaining way for kids to learn about the United States, and it's perfect for summer fun!

WEIRD BUT TRUE! USA provides strange/interesting/unique facts about America's fifty states and its territories. Each page of this pint-sized book has amazing photographs (of course -- it's a National Geographic publication!), and fun facts that are guaranteed to make you scratch your head. In fact, some of these tidbits are almost too strange to believe, and you won't believe how much material this little book covers.

Rather than try to describe this book, I think it's best to let the book speak for itself:

The United States averages 1,250 tornadoes every year -- about 10 times more than any other country.

Jell-O is the official state snack of Utah.

A study found that Americans report more UFO sightings on the Fourth of July than on any other day.

At Oregon's Great Salt Lick Contest, competitors present blocks of salt licked by cows and sheep as art.

During a hurricane, 30 flamingos at a zoo in Miami, Florida, were herded into a bathroom.

Green Bay, Wisconsin, is known as the toilet paper capital of the world.

As you can see, WEIRD BUT TRUE! USA has entertaining trivia about the good ole' USA! Kids and parents alike will enjoy sharing these interesting facts. Highly recommended!

Kid Konnection: Show Me History! Books

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a series of books that parents and kids alike will love!

Summary: Considered by many historians to be the greatest American president, Abraham Lincoln led the Union at the greatest turning point in the nation’s history. Abraham Lincoln: Defender of the Union! tells the story of one of America’s most admired figures in graphic novel format. From his childhood on a farm in Kentucky to the battlefields of the Civil War, Abraham Lincoln served the United States with resolve, intelligence, and courage unlike that of any other president. Readers of all ages will be entertained and educated by the full-color illustrations and historically accurate narrative of this graphical biography. -- Portable Press

Summary: Alexander Hamilton: The Fighting Founding Father! tells the story of one of the most ambitious and controversial figures in American history in a graphic novel format. From a rough childhood on the Caribbean island of Nevis to the highest levels of American politics, Alexander Hamilton’s life was filled with adventure, conflict, and controversy. Full-color illustrations and an entertaining narrative make this graphical biography of America’s first Secretary of the Treasury accessible for readers of all ages. -- Portable Press

Summary: This graphical biography tells the story of the most prominent leader of the American civil rights movement. With full-color illustrations and a historically accurate narrative, Martin Luther King Jr.: Voice for Equality! will inform and entertain readers of all ages. From his childhood in Atlanta to his rise as an international icon of human rights and a fiery orator who refused to back down in the face of adversity, King’s life story serves as an ongoing source of inspiration. -- Portable Press

Summary: When Amelia Earhart became the first woman to make a solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932, she immediately became an American icon and a subject of endless fascination for generations to come. In Amelia Earhart: Pioneer of the Sky!, the story of the bold and daring aviator’s life is presented in graphic novel format, with full-color illustrations and historically accurate details. From her hardscrabble childhood to her final flight—and mysterious disappearance—Earhart’s journey will entertain, captivate, and inspire readers of all ages. -- Portable press

I am so impressed with the Show Me History! series of biographies for readers ages 8 - 12. These books are a winner of the 2019 National Parenting Product Awards (NAPPA), and they are a fantastic way to make learning fun for kids. The four books in the series are ABRAHAM LINCOLN: DEFENDER OF THE UNION! by Mark Shulman and Tom Martin, ALEXANDER HAMILTON: THE FIGHTING FOUNDING FATHER by Mark Shulman and Kelly Tindall, MARTIN LUTHER KING JR.: VOICE FOR EQUALITY! by James Buckley Jr. and Youneek Studios, and AMELIA EARHART: PIONEER OF THE SKY! by James Buckley Jr. and Kelly Tindall; and I honestly can't even pick a favorite because they are all so outstanding. These hardcover books are written in a graphic novel format with colorful illustrations, and I think even the most reluctant readers will be drawn to these history books about some of our country's most interesting heroes.

I've read some graphic novel history books in the past and enjoyed them quite a bit, but I think the Show Me History! series has definitely perfected this art. Each of these books provides a brief history of these individuals' lives and accomplishments with fun pictures and few words. Kids will definitely learn the highlights of these people's lives while not being turned off by a long and "boring" biography. In fact, the books' website claims, "It's a time machine you can read!"

In addition to the accounts of history, the end of these books also include some interesting pages that complement the biographies. There are lists of other individuals who were relevant to the specific cause as well as timelines, glossaries, and ways to find out more about these people. I love that these books encourage kids to discover more about these American heroes on their own by providing books, websites, and videos!

I definitely recommend this series to teachers as well as parents because the publisher has made these books ideal for learning. In addition to the approachable format of a graphic novel, they also have made resources readily available to enrich the reading experience. There are reading guides as well as interviews with the creators. There are also sample pages to download:
I highly recommend the Show Me History! series of graphic novels for all school and home libraries.

Thanks to Media Master for providing review copies of these books.

Kid Konnection: National Geographic Kids Almanac 2020

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you the latest edition of a book that I've reviewed quite a few times!

Summary: It's the 10th anniversary of the world's best-selling almanac for kids! This year the Almanac features all-new content, interviews with explorers in each chapter, a special look at what was going on in the world when the first National Geographic Kids Almanac came out 10 years ago, plus the results of the 2019 Almanac Challenge and a new Challenge for kids who want to get involved with helping our planet. Kids can have fun keeping up with our quickly changing world with the New York Times best-selling almanac, packed with incredible photos, tons of fun facts, crafts, activities, and fascinating features about animals, science, nature, technology, conservation, and more. There's a whole chapter full of fun and games, including activities, jokes, and comics. Practical reference material, including fast facts and maps of every country, has been fully updated. Homework help on key topics is sprinkled throughout the book. -- National Geographic Kids

Every year I tell myself that I've already reviewed the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS ALMANAC, yet every year I can't help but feature it again. It really is one of my favorite kids' books (ever), and the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS ALMANAC 2020 is no exception. This is the 10th year anniversary of the publication of the almanac, and the publisher manages to add new things each year and keep it fresh!

The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS ALMANAC 2020 is a must-have for home and school libraries. There is more information in this book that you can imagine; and somehow, the presentation and content make it so fun to read. Honestly, what's better than an education and entertaining book for kids?

Of course, one of the highlights of the almanac is the photography. It's absolutely amazing and often times breathtaking! You know what I mean if you've ever opened a National Geographic Kids' book. In addition, there are also crafts, fun facts, games, quizzes, comics, jokes, and more! One of my favorite things about the 2020 book is that it provides interviews with real life National Geographic Explorers including a geologist and climate scientist, an anthropologist, a bioengineer, and an underwater photographer.

There truly is something for everyone in this book. The chapters are as follows: Your World 2020, Amazing Animals, Science and Technology, Going Green, Culture Connection, Space and Earth, Fun and Games, Awesome Exploration, Wonders of Nature, History Happens, and Geography Rocks.
There is also a 20/20 Visionary Challenge which asks readers to imagine the world 10 years int he future and to imagine a positive change, invention or discovery that they'd like to see happen. The results will show up in the 2021 Almanac.

I know some kids are going to read this book from cover to cover, while other ones will just page through it and read what interests them. Either way, I think readers will become more socially conscious about the world around us... and that's a very good thing.

The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS ALMANAC 2020 is a winner. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Media Masters for providing a review copy of this novel.

Kid Konnection: Make This!

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you another great book from National Geographic Kids.

Summary: Create your maker space with this fun and instructive book, chock-full of hands-on activities and cool experiments to get kids thinking and tinkering.

This book is designed to inspire the next generation of engineers and supports all kinds of kid creators: those who prefer guided instruction, those who prefer to dream up and design objects on their own, and everyone in between. With thoughtful text and bright illustrations, kids get the tools and the know-how to tackle all kinds of exciting projects: building a kaleidoscope, designing a fidget spinner, planting a rain forest, creating a musical instrument, and more. Unconventional scenarios inspired by real National Geographic explorers give kids a chance to think outside the box and apply their maker skills to real life. Chapters are divided up by scientific principle, such as simple machines, energy, and forces. In each chapter, kids can start by following step-by-step activities, or get creative by tackling an open-ended challenge. Helpful sidebars explain the science behind what's happening every step of the way.

Make This! is perfect for curious and STEM-loving kids, families looking for a fun way to play together, and anyone else who's ready to get creative and start tinkering! -- National Geographic Kids

I bet you didn't know that tomorrow is the beginning of National Engineers Week, did you? Eweek was created in 1951 and "is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers." So it's perfect timing (if I do say so myself) to share with you the National Geographic Kids book, MAKE THIS!: BUILDING, THINKING, AND TINKERING PROJECTS FOR THE AMAZING MAKER IN YOU by Ella Schwartz with photographs by Matthew Rakola.

MAKE THIS! is a wonderful book for budding engineers ages 8 - 12. With almost 160 pages, this book has instructions for lots of interesting projects that encourage creativity. For example, there are step-by-step instructions for making a skee-ball challenge using an inclined plane as well as a rain forest in a bottle. Other projects that caught my eye include a Sound Wave Stethoscope, a Color Kaleidoscope, a Water Balloon Helmet, and a Fidget Spinner. I was truly impressed with all of the fun projects and just how educational they are. In addition to the easy-to-follow instructions, there are ratings for difficulty levels, items you'll need to complete the project, and how many people it will take.

I sound like a broken record telling you every few weeks just how great National Geographic Kids books are, and MAKE THIS! is no exception. This book truly gives new meaning to the words "fun and educational." As a mom, I loved the project ideas and instructions, but there are also text boxes with explanations (What's Going On?) and questions for that require some additional thought (Think About It). These elements really bring this book to the next level by relating these various projects to real-world applications.

I even liked how this book was designed. The chapters are broken into different scientific principles like Simple Machines, Materials, Systems, Optics, Energy, Acoustics, Forces, and Motion. Each chapter has between six and nine projects so kids will have plenty of projects to try. And of course, this book has amazing photographs and illustrations which really makes it even more enticing for middle grade readers.

All in all, MAKE THIS! is an excellent book for students interested in STEM. I highly recommend it for both home and school libraries.

Thanks to Media Masters for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: It's Up to You, Abe Lincoln

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a terrific book that's perfect for the President's Day holiday.

Summary: History gets hilarious in this interactive Abraham Lincoln biography that will have readers laughing while they learn. Perfect for readers of Nathan Hale’s Hazardous Tales.

Abraham Lincoln was one of the greatest presidents of all time. But what did it take to rise from frontier poverty? To lead his country through the Civil War? To alter the course of history forever?

Father-daughter team Tom and Leila Hirschfeld’s tongue-in-cheek biography explores ten crucial decisions in one amazing life. With over one hundred pieces of archival and original art, fun facts, sidebars, historical trivia, and more, this book follows Abe’s footsteps through the close calls that defined his leadership and shaped America as we know it today. -- Crown Books for Young Readers

IT'S UP TO YOU, ABE LINCOLN: HOW I MADE THE BIGGEST DECISIONS OF MY LIFE by Tom & Lelia Hirschfeld is a fantastic biography of one of our country's best (if not the best) presidents. It's a unique look at President Lincoln's life and the difficult choices he made along the way. The book focuses on how ten of Lincoln's decisions forever changed the course of his life... and our country.

IT'S UP TO YOU, ABE LINCOLN isn't your typical biography and that's why it's so fun for readers ages eight to twelve years old (but if I'm being honest, I think high school kids will appreciate this book too.) While the book includes all this important historical aspects of his life, it presents the information in an almost casual and fun way. There are photographs and pictures with little speech bubbles that make the history lessons humorous as well as sidebars with interesting tidbits.

But what I really liked about this book was that it was more than just a history lesson. I was pleasantly surprised by how much information was in this almost 300 page book, but it was presented in such a way to make readers realize just how much Lincoln's choices mattered. For every turning point in Lincoln's life (or at least the ten major ones), readers are given four options that he could have made. Even one different decision could have been detrimental to the future of the United States. It also makes young readers see history in a different light... while also making learning fun.

IT'S UP TO YOU, ABE LINCOLN is just terrific for so many reasons. Highly recommended for President's Day and every day!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Misfits

Every weekend, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekly feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a fun middle grade book that's the first in a new series!

Summary: In Enchantasia, becoming a legendary prince or princess doesn’t happen overnight. Enter Royal Academy, the training ground for the fairy tale leaders of tomorrow!

But Devin has major reservations about her new school and her royal future. How can she be a princess and the best creature caretaker Enchantasia has ever seen? It doesn’t help that there’s something seriously weird about RA’s headmistress. Olivina seems obsessed with preparing students for possible attacks from villains (“A royal can’t rule when they’re stuck in a tower!”) Devin gets that being Snow White and Rapunzel’s fairy godmother has probably made Olivina pretty paranoid, but anytime someone steps a toe out of line, Olivina becomes more of a fairy nightmare than a fairy godmother.

Something isn’t right with this lady, and Devin is determined to find out what. But what Devin discovers could change the fairy tale world forever… -- Sourcebooks

When I received this adorable promotional box for the new middle grade novel MISFITS by Jen Calonita, I was immediately hooked! Doesn't this collection of book goodies make you just want to pick up this novel? Plus, check out the cover -- isn't it just perfect with "princess" wearing polka dot leggings and reading a book? I'm way beyond the target audience for this book, but I know I would have loved all of this as a kid (because I still do!)
MISFITS is the start of a new series for author Jen Calonita -- the Royal Academy Rebels series. Booking Daughter and I have been a big fan of Jen since we met her many years ago. We both loved her SECRETS OF MY HOLLYWOOD LIFE books as well as the BELLES series, and I'm sure her latest books, the Fairy Tale Reform School series, are amazing too! She knows how to create characters that young girls aspire to while also writing fun and entertaining stories about them. It says something that she loves both Disney and Star Wars, and I think that's apparent in her latest book!

MISFITS is kind of/sort of a princess story, but it's also an adventure tale! That means it will appeal to young girls with all sorts of interests. Devin is happy with her current life. She loves to play with animals and she has a special way of communicating with them. However, Devin is a princess and it's time for her to attend the Royal Academy.

Needless to say, Devin isn't your typical princess material. When she gets to the Royal Academy, she discovers that she's not like the other girls. She didn't come prepared for the training and she really doesn't have a desire to have dresses made and her hair done. She also notices that something is very strange with Olivina, the headmistress. She plays "games" with the princesses-in-training constantly, testing their skills against villains...and Devin eventually discovers that Olivina herself might be an actual villain!

I thought MISFITS was a great middle grade book. It was the perfect mix of princess/adventure, and Devin is a fantastic character. I'm certain many girls will relate to Devin, and it's certainly hard not to root for her against Olivina. The book is full of "princess" humor but there is also some great action scenes that I could totally see in a movie (hint, hint!).

I also enjoyed some of the kids that Devin met at school. They are definitely characters that kids will relate to, and I liked some of the less conventional friendships that were developed. I really can't stress how likable Devin is. She's smart, creative, strong; and her ability to support others is inspiring.

As a mom, I loved this book. The story is sweet but entertaining with lots of great messages for young girls. There is a recurring theme of good versus evil, but there are also strong themes of self-respect, staying true to one's self, being a good friend, and more.

MISFITS is a must-read for middle grade girls, and I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series. Highly recommended!

Kid Konnection: History's Mysteries

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a book for the kid in your life who is curious about history!

Summary: Curious kids itching for real-life Indiana Jones-like intrigue will get swept away with the next book in this spine-tingling series about solving puzzles of the past--from whole civilizations that have vanished to mystifying monuments and urban legends.

Fans of Night at the Museum and the Indiana Jones saga will be fascinated by these real-life mysteries: Is there any truth to the legend of Bigfoot? Why have planes and ships suddenly disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle? Is there really a lost city of gold in the jungle of Central America? The next book in this exciting new series will cover even more of history's most fascinating head-scratching conundrums, including the curse of the Hope Diamond, King Tut's tomb, black holes, the puzzling disappearance of ancient civilizations, cryptic creatures of myth and legend, long-lost treasure, and so much more. Kids can dig into these mysteries, uncover clues, and ponder leading scientific theories to help decipher what really happened. Chock-full of cool photos, fun facts, and spooky fun, this book is sure to keep curious kids engaged as they try to piece together these puzzles of the past! -- National Geographic Kids

National Geographic Kids is back with another edition of HISTORY'S MYSTERIES: FREAKY PHENOMENA: CURIOUS CLUES, COLD CASES, AND PUZZLES FROM THE PAST by Kitson Jazynika. It's the perfect gift for kids who are interested in history... and truthfully even for ones who don't think they are interested in history. This 160 page book make learning about history fun because it covers strange real-life mysteries!

HISTORY'S MYSTERIES is a very cool book for kids and adults alike. There are some amazing stories about some of history's most famous unsolved cases like the Loch Ness Monster, the Curse of the Hope Diamond, the Baiae Tunnels, and more! I've always been drawn to the mystery surrounding King Tut, so that section was especially interesting to me. But I found quite a few of the features to be extremely thought-provoking. I'm sure every reader will have a favorite mystery (or two!)

Once again, I am impressed with how these National Geographic Kids' books present material to kids. It goes without saying that the photographs and other images are amazing and certain to draw in even the most reluctant of readers. I also like that the written material is presented in a concise, easy-to-read way. There are plenty of fun facts, and I like the "New Evidence Revealed" sections. This book is about history but it's not at all intimidating to kids!

I also like that the ideas are offered in such a way that kids can try to solve these mysteries... or at least, they can come to their own conclusions about these mysteries. So while this book is providing some historical context to kids, it's also making them think about the information. How awesome is that?

I highly recommend HISTORY'S MYSTERIES. It's a must-have for school and home libraries.

Kid Konnection: Hey, Kiddo

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a terrific graphic novel.

Summary: In kindergarten, Jarrett Krosoczka's teacher asks him to draw his family, with a mommy and a daddy. But Jarrett's family is much more complicated than that. His mom is an addict, in and out of rehab, and in and out of Jarrett's life. His father is a mystery. Jarrett doesn't know where to find him, or even what his name is. Jarrett lives with his grandparents. Two very loud, very loving, very opinionated people who had thought they were through with raising children until Jarrett came along. Jarrett goes through his childhood trying to make his non normal life as normal as possible, finding a way to express himself through drawing even as so little is being said to him about what's going on. Only as a teenager can Jarrett begin to piece together the truth of his family, reckoning with his mother and tracking down his father. Hey, Kiddo is a profoundly important memoir about growing up in a family grappling with addiction, and finding the art that helps you survive. -- Scholastic

Looking back at Book Expo, one of the highlights was getting a signed copy of HEY, KIDDO: HOW I LOST MY MOTHER, FOUND MY FATHER, AND DEALT WITH FAMILY ADDICTION by Jarrett J. Krosoczka. I have been a big fan of the Lunch Lady series for years; and when I found out that the author had written a memoir about his childhood, I just knew it would be something special!

HEY, KIDDO is truly a wonderful graphic novel about Jarrett Krosoczka's complicated childhood. His mother was an addict, who was absent for long periods from Jarrett's life; and he didn't really know his father at all. He lived with his maternal grandparents who undoubtedly loved him, but weren't always the easiest people to life with.

As Jarrett grows older and becomes more aware of his family situation, he begins to realize the truth about his parents. He learns to accept his mother and he even begins to have a relationship of sorts with his father. Despite all of this things, Jarrett does his best to just be "normal," and in the process, he finds that his love of drawing helps him not only survive, but thrive!

Words cannot express how much I adored HEY, KIDDO. This graphic novel has fantastic illustrations (of course!), but I was truly blown away by how these drawings were able to convey the different characters' emotions. I'm not a huge reader of graphic novels (although I do enjoy them when I pick one up!), and I guess I didn't realize just how intense they can be.

It certainly didn't hurt that Mr. Krosoczka had a powerful childhood story. His situation was definitely complicated; and it's a true testament, both to him and his grandparents, how he was able to use art to cope. I found Mr. Krosoczka's strength to be admirable, and I think middle graders and high schoolers will find much to appreciate in this story.

However, it's how much this book has the potential to help children in similar situations that really makes HEY, KIDDO so amazing. Mr. Krosoczka's story is not only heartwarming, but it also shows children that it's possible to get through difficult times with a good support system. Furthermore, it's also possible to get through difficult times if you find something inside of yourself that can make you happy, like Mr. Krosoczka love of drawing.

HEY, KIDDO has already been chosen as a 2018 National Book Award Finalist, and I honestly can't think of a book (or author) that is more deserving. Highly recommended!

I received a copy of HEY, KIDDO at the 2018 Book Expo.

Review: Max Einstein: The Genius Experiment

Summary: Max Einstein is not your typical genius. She...
-Hacks the computer system at NYU to attend classes
-Builds inventions to help the homeless
-And talks to Albert Einstein! (Okay that's just in her imagination)

But everything changes when Max is recruited by a mysterious organization! Their mission: solve some of the world's toughest problems using science. She's helped by a diverse group of young geniuses from around the globe as they invent new ways to power the farthest reaches of the planet. But that's only if the sinister outfit known only as The Corporation doesn't get to her first...

Max Einstein is a heroine for the modern age and will be looked up to by readers for generations to come. -- Little Brown/Jimmy Patterson Book

It's been awhile since I've reviewed a kids' book as part of Mystery Mondays, but I have a terrific one to share with you. It's called MAX EINSTEIN: THE GENIUS EXPERIMENT by James Patterson and Chris Grabenstein, and it's one of those books that kids (even reluctant readers) are going to love. It's part mystery and part science book... and it's a lot of fun. It's also educational so parents and teachers are going to love it too!

MAX EINSTEIN: THE GENIUS EXPERIMENT tells the story of a twelve year old orphan girl whose name just happens to be Max Einstein. She also just happens to be a genius. It's no surprise that Max is obsessed with Albert Einstein -- she even has "conversations" with him, but it is a little surprising that she attends NYU (She hacked their computer system and altered their records!) Max is also a squatter who lives above some stables, and she creates inventions in her free time that help her homeless friends.

Max's life is turned upside down one day when she is recruited by a super secret organization and sent to Israel. Max doesn't know much about this organization, but she knows that they help solve world problems by using science. Max and some other brainy kids find themselves pitted against The Corporation (another secret but sinister organization), and they have to find a way to work together (using their individual strengths) to save themselves... and the world!

I read MAX EINSTEIN: THE GENIUS EXPERIMENT on the train home from Book Expo way back in May, and I absolutely loved it. I have been wanting to feature this book for some time, but I also wanted to wait until it was nearer to the book's release (which just happens to be October 8th!) This book is just terrific for middle graders -- both boys and girls. Max is a terrific heroine who has a heart as large as her brain, and the way science was incorporated into this novel makes it super special!

I really can't stress how much I loved this book. Boys and girls alike will be drawn to Max and her desire to save the world. In addition, the entire cast of smart (and diverse) kid characters are entertaining. I loved Max and all of the kids as well as the dynamics between them... and I have a feeling that we will see more of these young geniuses in future books!

There were definitely a few mystery elements to this book including the big mystery of Max's parents and why she's an orphan. It wasn't solved in this first book, but there were definitely some clues. In addition, there was a suspense/mystery story once Max joined with the Change Makers Institute. Max, along with the other kids, were sent to the Congo to figure out how to bring solar power to a village. However, they unfortunately found themselves battling some local gang leaders as well as the evil Corporation.

As a mom, I loved how much this book could teach youngsters. There are some great science aspects of the story, but there are also some great messages like learning to work with difficult people, sacrificing for a greater good, taking care of our environment, helping those less fortunate, and more. I also appreciated that the book stressed the importance of creativity rather than just learning from books and testing.

All in all, I think MAX EINSTEIN: THE GENIUS EXPERIMENT is perfect for middle grade readers. Highly recommended!

I received a copy of this book at the 2018 Book Expo.

Mystery Mondays is a regular feature where I review all types of mystery books -- traditional mysteries, suspense/thrillers, and even cozies! Please feel free to share your thoughts on any recent mystery books that you've read.

Kid Konnection: National Geographic Kids Almanac 2019

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a book that Booking Son looks forward to each year!

Summary: The world's best-selling almanac for kids is back and in demand! This year's includes the latest information about what's new and newsy in our world, special dates to anticipate, and fresh topics, and much more.

Have fun keeping up with our quickly changing world with the New York Times best-selling almanac, curated and created just for kids. It's packed with incredible photos; tons of fun facts, crafts, and activities; and fascinating features about animals, science, nature, technology, and more. New features include an updated "Fun and Games" chapter filled with all-new games, jokes, and comics; all new weird-but-true facts; "19 Facts for 2019" feature in every chapter; updated reference material; and cool stuff on topics today's curious kids care about. -- National Geographic Kids

You know a book is good when Booking Son tells me to hurry up and review it so he can take it to his room! There aren't a lot of books that excite him, but the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC KIDS ALMANAC 2019 is definitely one of them. And I couldn't agree more with him!

The NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ALMANAC 2019 is geared towards kids eight to twelve years old, but I won't lie when I say that I love it too. There are so many terrific things contained in this 350+ page book that it's hard to narrow them down to share with you. At least the creators of the book have  arranged it in a simple way. There are sections for Your World 2019, Amazing Animals, Science and Technology, Going Green, Culture Connection, Space and Earth, Fun and Games, Awesome Exploration, Wonders of Nature, History Happens, and Geography Rocks. As you can clearly see, there is definitely something for everyone between the pages of this book.

One fun aspect of this book is that it features 19 facts for 2019. In every chapter, there are 19 amazing facts about something. For example, there are 19 Amazing Facts About Vikings, Telescopes, Deserts, Big Cats and more! Another fun thing about this almanac is encourages kids to get involved... and make a difference. There are sections on recent natural disasters as well as ideas for protecting our seas and how extreme weather impacts our world.

Each year, there is an Almanac Challenge; and this year it's titled Lions Forever. (You might remember last year's had to do with sharks!) This challenge is another great part of the book because it tries to get kids involved in change. This year's focus is on the threats that lions face and why we should work to save them. Kids are encouraged to visit natgeokids.com/almanac to create a lion poster and send a message with their entry about why they feel lions must be saved. There's even $500 cash prize for the winner!
In addition to all of the information, there are gorgeous photographs like we've come to know and expect from National Geographic. Truly, this book and the photographs are special and will visually draw in even the most reluctant of readers. There are also crafts, recipes, activities, and digital extras to keep kids busy during the summer season!

We are huge fans of the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC ALMANAC 2019 and we highly recommend it to both families and schools!

Thanks to Media Masters Publicity for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Al Capone Throws Me a Curve

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a terrific middle grade book by a Newbery Honor-winning author.

Summary: Return to Al Capone’s Alcatraz with Newbery Honor-winning author Gennifer Choldenko in this charming addition to the beloved series about the son of a prison guard.

Moose Flanagan lives on a famous island in California: Alcatraz, home to some of the most dangerous prisoners in the United States in the 1930s. It’s the summer before he starts high school, and Moose is going to play a lot of baseball and win a spot on the high school team. But he still needs to watch his special older sister, Natalie–and then the warden asks Moose to look after his two-faced, danger-loving daughter, Piper.

In the cell house there are rumors that the cons will a strike, and that Moose’s father might step up to a new job. Moose is worried: What will this mean for their family, especially for Natalie, who’s had some scary run-ins with prisoners? Then the unthinkable happens: Natalie winds up someplace she should never, ever go. And Moose has to rescue her. -- Wendy Lamb Books

It's been quite a few years since I read AL CAPONE DOES MY SHIRTS by Gennifer Choldenko with our mother/daughter book club. I remember loving it... as did all of the kids and moms in our group. If you're a member of a book club, you know how rare it is that everyone enjoys a book! I have always been fascinated by Alcatraz and Al Capone, so that's an added plus for me, but the books in this middle grade series are truly something special.

The fourth book in the series, AL CAPONE THROWS ME A CURVE: A TALE FROM ALCATRAZ, has recently been released; and I have to say -- it's fantastic. I devoured this book last week on a rainy day, and I am honestly kicking myself for not reading the entire series. I love the characters and, of course, the setting; and Ms. Choldenko's writing is just so darn good. I believe that even reluctant readers will enjoy these books.

AL CAPONE THROWS ME A CURVE centers around Moose, and thirteen year old boy whose family lives on Alcatraz Island. The story takes place during the depression when his father was "lucky" to have his job as a prison guard. Moose is a great kid with an awful lot on his plate. Moose would like nothing more to play baseball all of the time with his friend, and their goal is to make the high school team... which is unheard of for incoming freshman.

However, Moose also has to watch out for his older sister Natalie who lives with autism and handle his mother's dark moods. To make things even more difficult for Moose, the warden asks him to look after his trouble-making daughter Piper. There is a lot of tension at Alcatraz too because the prisoners are threatening to strike... and that could have serious effects of Moose's father and his entire family!

Moose has always been protective of Natalie, but it's becoming harder as she gets older. When Natalie turns seventeen, she receives a new haircut, a new dress, and new shoes... and she discovers that she enjoys looking pretty. She even develops a crush on a high school baseball player. However, the unthinkable happens when Natalie finds herself inside the gates of Alcatraz, and poor Moose has to go in to one of the most dangerous prisons in the country to save her!

AL CAPONE THROWS ME A CURVE has it all -- wonderful characters, an exciting setting, and lots of action. There's even a little bit of baseball for those interested in the sport! The book has just the right blend of story and history to make it a fun and educational read, and there are even sections at the back of the book that explain the historical context of Alcatraz, Al Capone, and the "baseball."

As a mom, I love so much about this book. One of the best things is that the book is entertaining while also touching upon some very serious topics. Moose's family (and Moose for that matter) is dealing with some major things including autism, depression, and financial issues. The book does a wonderful job of exploring these things in a compassionate, yet honest, way; and it really does allow children in similar situations to see that they aren't alone.

AL CAPONE THROWS ME A CURVE would be a great coming-of-age book to read in the classroom or for middle grade book clubs. Some of the themes you might want to explore include family dynamics, mental health, friendship, loyalty, staying true to one's self, special needs, responsibility, and honestly. I highly recommend this book and the other ones in this series!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: Toy Academy

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a fun book for middle grade readers.

Summary: Playing is serious business. Welcome to Toy Academy: where toys learn to play. This is where action figures train to battle, stuffed animals study the art of the hug, and collectibles practice standing very, very still.

Though Grumbolt isn't really any of those things, he's determined to fit in. But when the Evil Toy Academy threatens to bring down his school, it's up to Grumbolt to go where no good toy has gone before and prove he's truly a great toy after all.

This laugh–out–loud chapter book by Brian Lynch, the writer of Minions and a writer of The Secret Life of Pets, is a classic in the making. -- Scholastic

I have to admit that the gift box that came with the book TOY ADADEMY: SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED by Brian Lynch and illustrated Edwardian Taylor was absolutely adorable. It included a yoyo, lego bricks, a slinky, and a colorful lollipop. I figured it the promo materials were this fun, then the book had to be too. Hint: it was!
TOY ACADEMY is a fantastic new book written by a screenwriter who has worked on some pretty incredible movies including The Secret Life of Pets, Minions, Puss in Boots, and Hop. He has also written some comic books (but I'm not as familiar with them!) It is a hilarious story about a toy academy where toys learn to play. The academy trains action figures so they can battle, stuffed animals so they can hug, and collectibles so they can stand still. Great concept, right?

Grumbolt isn't really certain what type of toy he is. He's kind of a misfit (in the best possible way). A little girl sewed him but he has two different length arms (which make it hard to hug) and two different ears (so he doesn't really fit in with the cats.) He is determined to become the best toy possible for a little kid.

When the Evil Toy Academy starts sabotaging the Toy Academy, Grumbolt wants to help. He decides to sneak into the "evil empire" and save the say... and in the process, be the best toy ever!

I loved TOY ACADEMY. It is the first book in a new series, and I can't wait until the next one! These toys are awesome characters! The book is very funny and even has a few good messages thrown in. It's extremely fast-paced and certain to keep even reluctant readers attentions. It has a fairly large font and lots of adorable illustrations throughout.

The humor in this book is definitely the best part! It's truly a laugh out loud story that even parents will love. In fact, much of the humor is geared towards adults (and might even fly over kids' heads!) I can't rave enough about how creative this book was. The way the author describes these characters is so darn funny. For example, there are wisecracking jokes about the quality of the plastic as well as how long it takes for a transformer-like toy to switch to its other mode.

I loved TOY ACADEMY as a book but I also think this book would make an excellent movie -- let's hope! Highly recommended to middle grade readers!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book (and the fun toys!)

Kid Konnection: All-Star Activity Book

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you a book that will keep young sports fans busy!

Summary: Hours of fun await young sports fans with this must-have activity book from Sports Illustrated Kids!

Hidden pictures, dot‑to‑dot, trivia, word search, mazes, and funny fill‑ins are just some of the engrossing activities sports-loving kids will find in this full-color game book jam-packed with more than 150 photographs and illustrations. Have you ever wanted to know what quarterback shares your personality traits? There's a quiz for that! All the sports kids love--from soccer to baseball to gymnastics and more--are covered in the All-Star Activity Book making this the perfect companion for road trips, plane rides, or just keeping busy without screens after school. -- Liberty Street

In honor of a sports-filled weekend both for Penn State and the Super Bowl, I thought it would be fun to feature SPORTS ILLUSTRATED KIDS: ALL-STAR ACTIVITY BOOK. This book is a full of different activities for young sports fans aged 8 - 12; however, I will admit that I had fun with a few of the puzzles.

This 128 page softcover book is divided into chapter by sport and includes the ones you'd expect like football, baseball, and basketball. However, it also includes some you'd might be surprised to see like golf, tennis, hockey, and soccer. In addition to those sports, there are sections for the Olympics and All-Stars... so I think it's fair to say that sports enthusiasts will find something that will appeal to them.

Within in each section, there are a variety of activities including dot-to-dots, word searches, and mazes. There are also some activities that give kids a chance to show their creativity and illustrating skills. What I love about this book is that it's not all fun and games. It's also educational with blurbs on each page providing interesting tidbits about the various sports and athletes.

I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the color photographs in this book. It is a Sports Illustrated publication so you know you're going to get great photos! There are over 150 photographs and illustrations which make every page interesting even for the most reluctant of readers.

I think the ALL-STAR ACTIVITY BOOK is a fun way to keep your young sports fans entertained. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Blue Slip Media for providing a review copy of this book.

Kid Konnection: New National Geographic Kids Books

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you two new fantastic National Geographic Kids books!

Summary: Love to tell scary stories around the camp fire? Like to solve mysteries? Brave enough to hear the truth about some pretty freaky phenomena? Then cuddle up with this spooky spine-tingler, filled with delightfully frightful true stories of real-life monsters, doomed domains, menacing mysteries, strange disappearances, and so much more.

Meet ghosts, ghouls, and zombies. Go inside haunted houses, hidden graveyards, and deadly secret passages. The Fright-o-meter rates each story for its level of scariness. Full of thrills and chills, this book will have you sleeping with a nightlight for sure. Read if you dare, but don't say we didn't warn you! -- National Geographic

I decided to feature DON'T READ THIS BOOK BEFORE BED: THRILLS, CHILLS, AND HAUNTINGLY TRUE STORIES by Anna Claybourne on my blog because I'm sure there are kids who will love this book. Honestly, it's not exactly up my alley because I'm way too chicken; but I will say that I did read through it and there are some pretty amazing stories!

DON'T READ THIS BOOK BEFORE BED is 140+ pages of scary (but true) stories about real-life monsters, mysteries, disappearances and more! There are some seriously strange stories in this book! Like all National Geographic Kids books, the information is presented in a way that makes it fun for readers. There are lists, quizzes, and snippets about creepy things, and of course, there are terrific full color photographs that are perfect complements to the stories.

There are some really cool things about DON'T READ THIS BOOK BEFORE BED including the Fright-o-meter. That's right -- it's a cute graphic of a gauge that measures how scary the stories on the page are! I also really liked some of the topics covered including a page on zombie ants, a haunted building in London, and creeps of the deep (disgusting underwater creatures!)

DON'T READ THIS BOOK BEFORE BED is a book that will definitely appeal to kids who love scary stories. I love that it's a fun book that's also educational... and it will get even reluctant kids to read!

Summary: Why were the Easter Island heads erected? What really happened to the Maya? Who stole the Irish Crown Jewels? The first book in this exciting new series will cover history's heavy-hitting, head-scratching mysteries, including the Lost Colony of Roanoke, the Bermuda Triangle, the Oak Island Money Pit, Stonehenge, the Sphinx, the disappearance of entire civilizations, the dancing plague, the Voynich manuscript, and so many more. Chock-full of cool photos, fun facts, and spine-tingling mysteries. -- National Geographic Kids

HISTORY'S MYSTERIES: CURIOUS CLUES, COLD CASES, AND PUZZLES FROM THE PAST is another fun (yet educational) book from National Geographic Kids; and if I'm being honest, one that appealed to my tastes a bit more than the book above. I guess I just love mysteries of all types!

HISTORY'S MYSTERIES attempts to explain a lot of life's mysteries in a clear, concise way that's perfect for middle school (and high school) readers. I think the chapter names in this book give a great idea of what's between the covers: Vanished Civilizations, Unexplained Deaths and Disappearances, Creatures of Myth and Legend, Freaky Phenomena, Mystifying Monuments, Cryptic Codes and Lost Languages, and Treasure troves.

HISTORY'S MYSTERIES is the first book in a new series that provides some explanations for mysteries that have plagued the earth for years. I was fascinated by this book and the mysteries it contains! HISTORY'S MYSTERIES is part science lesson/part history lesson, and the information is presented in a very easy-to-read way. There are also tons of pictures and drawings that make these mysteries even more appealing to readers.

This book has so many interesting topics that I'm having a hard time just focusing on a few for this review. I loved the chapter on Unexplained Deaths and Disappearances which included a few pages on Amelia Earhart, but I also found some of the Freaky Phenomena mysteries to be pretty darn interesting. This section covered some strange stuff like flying saucers, strange footprints, and even a mummy!

HISTORY'S MYSTERIES is proves that life is, indeed, stranger than fiction. Highly recommended!

Thanks to Media Masters for providing review copies of these books.
