zhaleika - "Matka," Betts always called her mom, the only Polish word she was allowed outside the songs she sang in church, and in church she usually played her zhaleika. (p.5 ARC)
zhaleika: a Russian single-reed hornpipe. It is the most popular Russian folk wind instrument.

This is one of those odd-bodkin words I know from reading a lot of novels and books about Russia.
