Kid Konnection: Amanda Panda

Every Saturday, I host a feature called Kid Konnection -- a regular weekend feature about anything related to children's books. This week I'm going to share with you an adorable picture book that stars a hilarious character!

Summary: In the hilarious follow-up to Amanda Panda Quits Kindergarten, strong, sassy, and funny Amanda Panda is having a birthday crisis!

Amanda Panda’s birthday is tomorrow. She’ll be the first kid in her class to turn six! But when she gets to the bus stop, her best friend/worst enemy Bitsy announces that today is HER birthday! And her party is planned for Saturday, the same day as Amanda’s!

Birthday dreams ruined, Amanda’s can’t keep her temper in check at school. By recess, it looks like Amanda’s birthday plans—and her friendship with Bitsy—is over. But when the girls stop arguing long enough to listen to each other, they come up with a birthday plan that is TWICE the fun.

Young children will learn about sharing, compromise, and conflict resolution, all the while laughing along with Amanda and Bitsy in this adorable, school-based story from a new favorite character. - Doubleday

It seems like I'm always a little late to the game lately, but I found another terrific picture book character. She's Amanda Panda and she's the star of AMANDA PANDA AND THE BIGGER, BETTER BIRTHDAY by Candice Ransom and illustrated by Christine Grove. This is the second book in her series -- the first is AMANDA PANDA QUITS KINDERGARTEN, and Amanda Panda is having a bit of a situation surrounding her birthday.

Amanda Panda's birthday is tomorrow and she's the first one in her class to turn six years old. She's planning her party for Saturday and can't wait to invite everyone to her school bus themed party, but she's especially excited to invite her best friend Bitsy. Much to her dismay, Amanda Panda learns  that today is Bitsy's birthday and she's having her party the exact same day as Amanda... and her theme is Princess Kitten and she's having an ice cream sundae buffet! Amanda is distraught and doesn't even try to hide it!

The two pandas have quite the disagreement, but Amanda eventually finds that she misses her best friend. The two have a heated discussion, but then Amanda has a great idea! The girls have a double Princess Kitten School Bus birthday party and everyone comes! There are two cakes and two kinds of ice cream... and two best friends celebrating together!

AMANDA PANDA AND THE BIGGER, BETTER BIRTHDAY is a very cute book. I love the pastel illustrations and they are a super sweet complement to the story. I will admit that I wasn't too fond of Amanda's initial reaction to her friend's birthday; however, by the end of the book, she totally redeemed herself. I actually found the messages in this story to be fantastic for preschoolers. There are lessons about friendship, compromise, sharing and conflict resolution. I especially appreciated that the pandas worked things out on their own -- without an intervention from the parents. Highly recommended!

Thanks to the publisher for providing a review copy of this book.
